Canadian Grand Prix—A-
After nearly a month’s rest, the Formula One season continued in Montreal with surprising action. Mercedes’ intra-team fight became the focus of both the sprint and the race, with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell fighting for first place. After many wheel-to-wheel moments and complaints over the team radio, ultimately the Grand Prix went the way of Antonelli as Russell, the winner of the sprint race on Saturday, retired with a mechanical issue on lap 30. A total of six retirements in the race opened the door for Lewis Hamilton to take second, his best Grand Prix finish for Ferrari, and for Max Verstappen to take third, Red Bull’s best result this season. A- for one of the most eventful weekends yet.
French Open—B
This year’s French Open has broken expectations from its outset. Tragically, one of the best, Carlos Alcaraz, had to withdraw due to a wrist injury—an inflammation of the tendon sheath—leaving his reign of the French open for two consecutive years up for grabs. Meanwhile, Sinner has continued to build momentum in Alcaraz’ absence, becoming the first ever to win five successive Masters 1000 titles. B for the unfortunate absence and Sinner’s broken records.
UEFA Champions League—C+
The road to the final of the UCL this year saw notable drama, including a historic run by Fk Bodø/Glimt on their debut to the tournament and an eventful semifinal where defending champions Paris Saint-Germain narrowly bested Bayern Munich six to five on aggregate. Now, the stage is set for showdown at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on May 30, where an unbeaten Arsenal squad, returning to the final for the first time in 20 years, will challenge Luis Enrique’s PSG “machine” as the French club attempts to become the second in the Champions League era to retain the trophy. Interesting to see the promising debut performances, but C+ for the continued dominance of the bigger names in the tournament.
